Nathaniel Michael Burnfield, 27, of Canton Township, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008, as a result of being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 70. He was born February 12, 1981, in Washington, a son of Ricky and Debra Kosey Burnfield of Washington. Mr. Burnfield attended Wylandville Elementary School and, in 1999, graduated from Canon-McMillan High School, where he played for the varsity baseball team. He attended Penn Commercial for two years, receiving a degree in law administration in 2002, and then attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and its criminal justice program. For the past five years, he was a police officer for South Strabane Township, where he served as the CPR instructor and the arson investigator for the department. He had also been a police officer for Donora and East Washington Borough. Mr. Burnfield was a lieutenant and class I firefighter for Canton Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police #22, the Pittsburgh FOOLS (Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society) and George Washington Beagle Club. Mr. Burnfield had coached Little League Baseball and was an umpire. In his youth, he played baseball in the 84 Youth Baseball League. He was a huge Michigan fan and an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Burnfield was Protestant. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, William "Ron" Todd and Derrick Burnfield, both of Washington; and several uncles and aunts, Paul Kosey Jr., Ron and Trudy Kosey, Chuck and Barb Kosey, Dane and Dianne Ward, Randy and Loria Whipkey, and Bruce Burnfield. His paternal grandparents are Jack L. Burnfield and the late Virginia Hendershot Burnfield; his maternal grandparents are retired Washington City Police Chief Paul W. Kosey, Sr. and the late Mary Ann Iskey Kosey; and his maternal step-grandmother is Rose Taylor Kosey. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, November 10th, in Immaculate Conception Church, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. An athletic scholarship will be established in his name at Canon-McMillan High School. In an effort to accommodate friends and family of NATHANIEL MICHAEL BURNFIELD, who died Tuesday, November 4, 2008, William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, will provide a shuttle service to and from the funeral home for the 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. visitation Sunday from the park-and-ride lot at Interstate 70 Exit 16, Jessop Place. A Fraternal Order of Police service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
