Fred Warren “Pap” Smith Sr., 86, of Washington, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, following a short illness.
He was born October 3, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of John Smith and Mary Ward Smith.
Mr. Smith was veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a Medical Technician in Panama and received a World War II Victory Medal.
He worked at Jessop Steel Corporation for 34 years in the Specialty Milling Department and once worked at Duncan Miller Glass and Universal Cyclops.
Fred was an active member of Friendship Community Church, where he had done a great deal of work on the building.
He enjoyed golfing, trap shooting, hunting, camping, fishing and watching all Pittsburgh Sports Teams. He was a founding member of the Golden Pheasant Sportsmen’s Club, in 1956 and a former member of Edwin Scott Linton Post #175 of the American Legion.
He also spent winters in Florida for 29 years.
On April 8, 1950, he married Lois Jean Lyons who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Fred W. (Barb) Smith Jr. of Washington, Jeff (Cindy) Smith of Washington; a sister, Mary Jean (Harry) Moore of Clarrington, Ohio; four grandchildren, Heather Smith, Amy Dille, Melissa Smith, Christopher Smith; four great grandchildren, Hunter Dille, Olivia Burt, Wyatt Smith, Landon Smith.
Deceased are two brothers, William Smith and Bayard Spragg Jr.; a sister, Margaret Church and two infant siblings; stepfather, Bayard Spragg, Sr.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at William G. Neal Funeral Homes. Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, where services will be held Monday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rick Bruckner officiating. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery. Full Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post #175.
