William L. Poland, Sr., 85, of Washington, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2023, in his home with his family by his side. He was born July 25, 1937, in Washington, to the late Webb and Betty Poland. Mr. Poland was a veteran of the US Navy. Bill loved to hunt, fish, bowl, pitch horseshoes, and listen to Bluegrass music. He was famous for his turtle fries. He was retired from Columbia Gas, where he was a heavy equipment operator and heavy duty truck driver. Bill is survived by his wife Gayle Poland, four children, Rick Poland, of Washington, William Poland Jr. (Lori), of Washington, Becky Burgh (Ed), of Washington, and Lynn Hughes (James), of South Carolina; three sisters, Donna Eastham, Bonnie Briggs, and Pam Thomas; a brother, Dan Poland; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Robert Burgh. The family requests a casual attire, camo and blue jeans suggested. Family and friends will be received Wednesday, April 5, 2023, from 4 pm until 8 pm, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A service will be held Thursday, April 6th at 10 am, followed by burial in North Buffalo Church Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 175.
