Robert William Nelson, 79, of Washington, died December 7, 2021, in Canonsburg Hospital. He was born September 19, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the late Frank Nelson and Nancy Elizabeth Bowser Nelson. A veteran, Mr. Nelson served in the Army from August 10, 1967, until August 8, 1969, and again from December 15, 1970, until December 7, 1973. His awards include a Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze service stars, Combat Infantryman Badge; and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 2 overseas bars. Mr. Nelson worked as a security guard at the Columbus (Ohio) Library. He loved a good conversation and enjoyed meeting friends at Denny’s for breakfast and watching movies on television, especially westerns. On September 24, 1979, he married Esther Toland, who died August 20, 2015. Surviving are two stepdaughters, Linda (Mark) Miller of Washington and Brenda Sprowls of Claysville; five brothers, Frank Nelson, Jr., Charles Nelson, James Nelson, John Nelson, and Mike Nelson; and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Deceased is a step-son, Stanley Toland. Burial in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 15th. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
