Robert Howard Meeks, 98, of Washington, died Thursday, November 29, 2018, in the Washington Hospital. He was born August 30, 1920, in Washington, a son of Sanford W. and Rosetta Heacock Meeks. During World War II, Mr. Meeks served in the Army with the 3015th Engineering Maintenance Company, 4th Engineering Special Brigade. He was involved in the battle of New Guinea and the liberation of the South Philippines. His awards include the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 bronze battle stars, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, a good conduct medal, and a bronze arrowhead. Mr. Meeks also served stateside as a military police officer at South Park. Mr. Meeks worked for 41 years, 4 months at Findlay Refractories. He enjoyed gardening and time with family and friends. On February 20, 1944, he married Eleanor Lacock, who died December 5, 2014. Surviving are two daughters, Sharen Meeks of Washington and Cathie (Thomas) Wilson of Nixa, Missouri; two step-grandchildren, Kevin and Stacey; and a step-great-granddaughter, Ahlyssa. Mr. Meeks is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Deceased are brothers, Charles, James and Clarence Meeks, and sisters, Bertha Collar, Blanche Rasel and Mae Garrett. Friends will be received on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 4th. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
