Robert G. Nelson

Robert G. Nelson, 88, of Washington, passed away May 23, 2022, in his home. Born July 29, 1933, in Marianna, he was the son of the late John “Jock” Nelson and Elizabeth Grieg Nelson. Robert was a graduate of West Bethlehem High School and went to work for Bethlehem Mines until he entered the Army. He then worked at Crucible Mine, until their closing, and Consol Mines. In 1962, he went to work for the Bureau of Mines which later became Mine Safety and Health of Indiana, PA, as a supervisor for 40 years before retiring in 2002. He was a Life Member of National Mine Safety Recuse Association. Mr. Nelson served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service. Robert enjoyed his life to the fullest. He loved to garden and travel, and spend time with his family. He was involved with the Indiana Shrine Club, a Shriner of Jaffa Mosque in Altoona, Masonic Lodge 314, a 50-year member of the Clearfield Masonic Lodge, and a Life member of Scottish Rite Williamsport. Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Madeline Reeves Nelson. They were married May 24, 1969. Also surviving is his sister, Dorothy Giacomantonio; nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews. Preceding Robert in death were three brothers, William (Bill) Nelson, Alex John “Zigger” Nelson, and John “Jack” Nelson; five sisters, Anna Davidson Nelson, Betty Matchett, Margaret Pressley, Jean Leino, Ann “Nan” Stepp. The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice for everything they’ve done, especially Julie Marshman and Samantha Carpenter. Friends and family will be received Thursday, May 26, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and on Friday, May 27, 2022, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m., the time of services, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Interment to follow in Horn Cemetery, Marianna. Full military honors will be accorded graveside by American Legion Post 744 of Mariann
