Michael W. “Mike” Downey, 74, of Amity, died on January 15, 2022, in Washington Hospital. He was born on September 9, 1947, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Dr. Regis F. Downey and Ruth Forney Downey. A graduate of Canevin High School, he also had attended Point Park University. In 1999, he became an ordained minister. Mr. Downey was a member of Washington Alliance Church. He was very strong in his faith, and felt his calling was to lead people to the Lord. He was a soul winner. Mike was a man who was passionate about helping others, and became certified as a Christian counselor. He worked as a counselor at First Love Christian Academy. He also loved offering guidance, and sharing his home with students from the basketball team, who had come here from other countries. Mr. Downey was the owner of Downey and Sons Construction, and did remodeling jobs in the local area. He had retired from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, formerly the Pittsburgh Press, as the manager of outside circulation, in Washington. On February 4, 1967, he married Marjorie E. Baty, who survives. Also surviving are two children, Kimberly A. (Cody) Bedillion, of Amity, and Michael P. (Kimberly) Downey, of Dillsburg; two siblings, Dennie (the late Robert) Nichols, of Wisconsin, and Joseph Downey, of Florida; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Francis and John Downey; and two sisters, Mary Pat Downey, and Loretta Tabor. Memorial donations may be made to the Washington Alliance Church, 246 Sanitarium Rd., Washington, PA 15301. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 26, 2022, in Washington Alliance Church, with Rev. Brian Greenleaf officiating. A luncheon will follow.
