Michael R. “Mickey” Flynn, 82, of Washington, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, in his home, with family and friends by his side. He was born August 9, 1941, in Washington, the son of the late Michael and Isabelle Flynn. Mr. Flynn was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of St. James Parish. Mickey attended Washington High School, graduating in 1959. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was proud to serve his country and the Navy in the submarine division aboard the USS Redfish. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Washington and worked for Jessop Steel Corporation. In 1967, he acquired the Union Grill Restaurant, and created the motto, “Where Friends Meet” that remains to this day. After 40 years in the restaurant business, Mickey retired and passed the Union Grill on to his daughter, Erin. He was a tried and true Democrat who loved political discussions. He so wanted to make this year’s general election, but that was not to be. He enjoyed life, all sports, a good cigar, a bourbon on the rocks, and, most importantly, time with friends. Mickey was a friend to all. He truly never met a person he didn’t like, always found the good in everyone, and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Mickey treated everyone with respect no matter what stature they had in life. On August 8, 2008, he married Anne Belcastro, who passed away July 23, 2015. Mickey is survived by his son, Michael R. Flynn III; his daughter, Erin E. Flynn; three grandchildren, Michael R. Flynn IV, Anthony Rocco Flynn, and Anthony Bruno; a sister, Kathleen Flynn Welsh; nephew, Lou Reda; niece, Kristen Reda; and many more cousins, nieces, and nephews. He also leaves behind his devoted companion, Jodi Gallagher; his cousin and compassionate caregiver, Marsha Williams; special helper, Selena Miles; and his beloved dog, Bosco. Mickey was fortunate to have his dear friend, Ralph Andy, by his side daily, taking this short journey with him from diagnosis to death. Ralph offered encouragement, laughter, stories, and prayers. The family is so grateful for him. Memorial contributions may be made to Washington City Mission, 84 West Wheeling Street, Washington, PA 15301, or a charity of the donor’s choice. Friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 28th, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, July 29th, in St. James Parish, Immaculate Conception Church, with Father Michael Peck as celebrant. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
