Kermit L. Taggart

Kermit L. Taggart, of Washington, passed away peacefully in his home on September 19, 2021. He was born May 5, 1930, in Canonsburg and graduated from Canonsburg High School and Grove City College. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. Kermit served proudly as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. While in the service, he met his future wife, Louise, a fellow Marine. They were married 66 years. He was a social studies teacher at Washington High School and in White River Junction, Vermont. Upon retiring from a teaching career, he returned to family land in Pennsylvania where he started Taggart’s Orchard. He operated the orchard for 35 years and enjoyed selling apples and conversing with his customers. A long-time member of Faith United Presbyterian Church, Kermit helped initiate a program to fund free camp for children to attend Camp Pine Springs. He was an avid reader, American History buff, enjoyed traveling with his wife, and loved spending time with his family. Surviving are his beloved wife, Louise Snyder Taggart; son, David K. Taggart of Calhoun, Georgia; two daughters, Nancy (John) Tilley of Washington and Kathleen Taggart (Wayne Nelson) of Middlesex, Vermont; a sister, June Colilla of Bethesda, Maryland; seven grandchildren, Katelyn Willyerd, Ben Tilley, Nathan and Christine Lefavour, Jennifer, Andrew and Emily Taggart; and his much-loved great-grandchildren. Deceased are brother, James Taggart, and daughter-in-law, Betty Hensley Taggart. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the time of service, Friday, September 24th, in Faith United Presbyterian Church, 900 East Beau Street, Washington, with Rev. Jason Heffner officiating. Interment in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Faith United Presbyterian Church for the kids’ camp fund, or to Citizens Library. Arrangements have been entrusted to William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., Washington.
