Karen Ann Mruk, 72, of Martinsburg, WV and Meadowlands, passed away on November 4, 2023, in her home. She was born on October 14, 1951, in Canonsburg Hospital, and was the oldest child of the late John Stephen Mruk, Jr. and Katherine Reboich Mruk, of Meadowlands. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Martinsburg, WV, she also attended Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Meadowlands. Karen was a 1969 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School in Houston; a 1972 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, with a minor in science; and in 1975 she earned her master’s degree in school counseling from Shippensburg. Ms. Mruk was a teacher for six years at Opequon Elementary School. She continued her career as a school counselor, serving Gerrardstown, Back Creek Valley, Marlowe, Bedington and Rosemont Elementary School. In 2006, after 35 years in the Berkeley County School System, she retired. Karen enjoyed cooking, reading, watching movies and traveling. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. Surviving are a brother, John Mruk, of Washington; a nephew, J.T. Mruk (former wife Amy); a niece, Melissa (Tom) Liodis; two great nieces, Haley Mruk and Leanna Garey; three great nephews, Austin Mruk, Aiden Charters and Ethan Charters; an aunt, Sue Alexy; as well as numerous cousins. Friends and family will be received on Thursday, November 9, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, where a blessing and committal service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 10, 2023. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, 300 Pike St., Meadowlands, PA 15347.
