John Joseph Stanko, 96, of Washington, died February 7, 2023. He was born July 7, 1926, in Conemaugh, Cambria County, a son of the late Harry Stanko and Mary Hanchak Stanko. Mr. Stanko served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea, followed by service in the Merchant Marines. He was retired from the Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining. On August 21, 1954, he married Anita Luise Gerdes, who died May 17, 2009. Surviving is a daughter, Lisa Stanko. Deceased are his siblings, Charles, George and Andrew Stanko, Mary Stanko Sahaj, and Anna Drenchko. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2023, in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. Those attending should meet at the cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
