John "Jack" Palfreyman

John “Jack” Palfreyman was born Friday, August 21, 1931 in the family home on Arch Street. He lived and he loved with his family and friends until October 10, 2021. He had just celebrated his 90th birthday and was proud to have his family to celebrate with him. Jack was the son of the late Peter and Agnes Palfreyman. He was the proud grandson of his ‘Grandpap Jock’ - whom he modeled all of his loving behaviors after and spoke so fondly of. He was preceded in heaven by his brothers - Peter Jr. “Pete,” Edward “Chuck” and James “Jimmy” - that he missed very much. Jack graduated from Washington High School in 1949 and continued his Prexie fan-ship throughout his life. He worked at Tygart Valley and Brockway Plant 7 until his retirement after 35 years in March of 1984. Jack served in the Korean War and was wounded in action on June 25, 1953. He served with the 25th Infantry Division - Company K. After being wounded, he was transferred to Japan where he served in non-combative duty until he was honorably discharged. He was awarded a Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean War Service and Good Conduct Medal. In 1956, Jack married the late Dolores Butcher Palfreyman. He selflessly cared for her for 7 years when she lost her eyesight. She was the love of his life and there hadn’t been a day since her passing in 2020 that he hadn’t expressed how much he missed her. Together, Jack and Dolores welcomed their only child - Terry Palfreyman Blackhurst - in November of 1957. As a child, Terry was Jack’s sidekick. As an adult, he was her best friend. Terry has been Jack’s nightly caretaker - sharing ice cream, potato chips and watching Lifetime movies with him. Each night, he enjoyed her company so much that he tried to get her to stay for a few more minutes. In 1984, Jack devoted his retired life to helping to care for his granddaughter, Courtney Blackhurst Daloia. He was her taxi driver and biggest cheerleader. He was more reliable and loving than any granddaughter deserves. They shared songs and laughs and she can’t imagine her life without him. Jack’s life was completed when Courtney (with her husband Chad) welcomed their two boys - Gio and Ari. Jack was enamored by all they were capable of doing and doted over their every move. He spent time with them each and every day. He couldn’t get enough of them and gave them all of the love he had to give. He, also, fondly told stories of his oldest grandchildren, Christy (Tom) Sterling and Shawn (Cyndy) Blackhurst. He loved when they visited and shared memories of their childhood times together. And he continued this love with Christy’s boys, Sage and Carson - for whom he loved to make his famous scrambled eggs. Jack will be remembered for his wonderfully cooked breakfasts, humorous stories, beautiful smile and loving heart. He will be remembered for his love of hunting and fishing. His family will keep his memory alive for the rest of their years. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 15th. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175. The family requests that all in attendance kindly wear a face covering.
