John Hugh Engle

John Hugh Engle August 24, 1939 ~ August 3, 2023 John Hugh Engle passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends, in Allegheny General Hospital, due to complications following a brief illness. He was born on August 24, 1939, in Washington, a son of the late William Crosbie Engle and Elizabeth Brown Engle. John graduated from Washington High School, where he played trumpet in the concert and marching bands, and sang in the chorus. Following graduation, he went into business with his father, the late William C. Engle, and his brother, the late William R. Engle. In 1959 they created Engle’s Holiday Harbor Marina, on the Ten Mile Creek, in Millsboro, where he continued to work every day. On October 1, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Loraine Wheeler Engle, who passed away on February 14, 2019. In 1962, as a young man, John was the president of the Washington Timing Association. In addition to creating a track racing hot rod called the “Silver Sapphire” from the body of a 1932 “Little Deuce Coupe” Ford, the club promoted safe driving, and was an early advocate for the use of seat belts. The Silver Sapphire was shown at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, in New York, as well as in Florida. In the 1970’s, John served as vice-chairman of the City of Washington Citizen’s Advisory Committee. He was also a member of the Washington Christian Missionary Alliance Church, a charter member of Ten Mile Yacht Club, and a lifetime member of the United States Power Squadron. John enjoyed boat racing, water skiing, pleasure boating, cooking steaks on the grill, and especially spending time with his many friends and loving family. Surviving are his four children, John (Tom) Engle, Jr., of Pittsburgh, Linda (Bill) Westfall, of Dover, OH, Robert (Barb) Engle, of California, and Elizabeth (Chris) Knisely, of Washington; a sister, Lona (William) Vogeley; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Clark Engle and Becky Engle; a brother-in-law, James (Judy) Wheeler; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Zachary) Norman, Bill (Kari) Westfall, Jr., Katelyn (Tony) Yoder, Hanna Engle, Amber (Nathan) Moore, and Sarah (Troy) Frazier; ten great grandchildren, Briana, Kinley and Zayden Norman, Lila and Leighton Westfall, Maverick and Quinn Yoder, Kal’el, Ezekiel, and Shiloh Moore; as well as many nieces and nephews. Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, William (Patricia) Engle and Thomas (Becky) Engle. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Friends and family will be received on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the time of service, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, with Rev. Ben Marasco officiating. Entombment will follow at the Washington Cemetery Mausoleum. A memorial service will be held at Engle’s Holiday Harbor later this year. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 444 Liberty Ave #1300, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
