Janet Louise Stimmel Holmes, 76, of Avella, died February 26, 2023, in McMurray Hills Manor. She was born October 10, 1946, in Brownsville, the daughter of the late William H. and Margaret G. Lyons Stimmel. A 1964 graduate of Beth-Center High School, Janet continued her education at California University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1967. She taught second grade at Trinity Area School District until her retirement. She was a substitute teacher with Trinity and Avella schools and taught at Happy Face Learning Center. Janet also worked at Avella Library where she volunteered with the Children’s programs. Janet was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, was involved in Bible study, and a member of Faith Keepers. On November 28, 1969, Janet married William S. Holmes, who died April 4, 2019 after 49 years of marriage. Surviving is a son, Robert William Holmes (Courtney); a daughter, Jennie E. Buchanan (Thomas); a sister, Nancy L. Brown (Jim); grandchildren, Anthony (Victoria), Alycia, Blake, Wyatt, Crystal, and Jenna; great-granddaughter, Isabella; a sister-in-law, Janet Martin; nephews, Scott Brown (Shannon), and Jeff Brown (Hilary); cousins; stepmother, Esther Stimmel; and a close friend, William Wolfe. Family and friends will be received Thursday, March 2, 2023, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., and Friday, March 3rd, 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. The service will be in Faith United Presbyterian Church, 900 East Beau Street, Washington, Saturday, March 4th, at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Jason Hefner officiating. Interment to follow in Taylor Cemetery, Brownsville.
