Janet S. Abernathy

Janet S. Abernathy, 91, of Washington, died on Saturday, December 9, 2017, in Strabane Woods. She was born on July 7, 1926, in Covington, KY., a daughter of the late Cyril R., and Emma Stahel Schramm. Mrs. Abernathy was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing and Health, and subsequently worked as a Registered Nurse in both Cincinnati, and Youngstown, OH. She was a fifty-year active member of First Presbyterian Church, in Washington, where she had been a Deacon, and Elder, and longtime Sunday School teacher. Janet volunteered with many agencies affiliated with the Washington County United Way, where she had been on the Board of Directors.  She was also deeply involved with the Washington County Community Foundation, who had honored her as Humanitarian of the Year. Janet enjoyed birdwatching, gardening, and reading. On June 11, 1949, she married Dr. Ernest L. Abernathy, who died on May 18, 1997. Surviving are a son, James S. (Camille) Abernathy, of Washington; a daughter, Barbara Abernathy (Thomas) Bradshaw, of Goldsboro, NC.; a sister, Ann Judson, of Princeton, NJ; two grandchildren, Alice (Sean) Huneycutt, of Goldsboro, NC.; and Thomas Bradshaw, of Honolulu, HI; as well as several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a daughter, Carol Turner, and her husband, Brian. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2017, from 1 to 4 p.m., the time of Memorial Services, in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Washington County Community Foundation, 1253 PA-519, Eighty-Four, PA 15330; or The Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Ave., Washington, PA 15301; or the First Presbyterian Church, 100 East Wheeling St., Washington, PA 15301; or to the charity of donor’s choice.
