James Andrew Vehar, Sr., 81, of Washington, died Sunday, July 9, 2017, in Southmont of Presbyterian Senior Care, after being in declining health for several months.
He was born Mary 28, 1936, in Strabane, a son of the late Jacob Vehar and Avana “Jenny” Krovina Vehar.
Mr. Vehar graduated from Chartiers High School and served in the United States Air Force.
He worked at McGraw Edison in Canonsburg until the plant’s closure.
Mr. Vehar was an avid golfer at the Washington Country Club and enjoyed working with his hands.
He was Catholic.
His first wife, Charlotte Spina Vehar, died November 27, 1982.
In December 1990, he married Betty Jean Jennings, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, James “Chipper” Vehar, Jr., of New Jersey and Jason Vehar of Canonsburg; a daughter, Jamie Cumer of Canonsburg; two stepsons, Robert (Pam) Weaver of Indianapolis, Indiana and Andrew (Tina) Weaver of Traverse City, Michigan; two sisters, Jane (Robert) Wagner of Washington and Helen Premro of Canonsburg; and three grandchildren, Megan, Nicholas and Gabriel Weaver.
Deceased are three brothers, Jake, Martin “Matt” and Paul Vehar; and a sister, Lucy Hart.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2017, with Rev. Paul Harrington officiating. Burial will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
