James W. "Pappy" "Dick" Filby

James W.  “Pappy” “Dick” Filby Sr., 94 of Washington, died Friday, May 11, 2018 at Transitions Healthcare. He was born June 9, 1923 in Washington (Lincoln Hill), the son of the late Orville and Ethel Mae Fisher Filby. Dick was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in WWII. He worked at Duncan Miller as a glass shaper, Pittsburgh Railways as an inspector, Nichols Bakery as a checker for 14 years and Crile Machine as a truck driver, where he retired after 19 years. He owned and operated Filby’s Atlantic Station on Rt. 19 North. Dick was a Charter Life Member of the South Strabane Volunteer Fire Dept #2 and a Charter Life Member of Good Sam’s Club. On January 23, 1943, he married Mary Leona Camp, who died July 12, 2004. Surviving are two sons, James W. (Donna) Filby Jr. of Houston, Floyd E. Filby of Waynesburg; a daughter, Mary Lee (Michael) Quinn of Washington; a brother, Robert Filby of the state of Washington; a sister, Mildred Smith of TN; six grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren. Deceased are three brothers, John Filby, Orville Filby Jr. and David Filby; three sisters, Mable Braner, Virginia Elliott and Betty Smith. Friends will be received Sunday, May 13, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m. at William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd, 925 Allison Ave, Washington, where services will be held Monday, May 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rick Bruckner officiating. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery. South Strabane Fire Department will hold a service, Sunday, May 13, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.  Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post #175. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to charity of one’s choice.
