James H. Carroll

James H. Carroll, 95, of Washington, died Wednesday, March 21, 2018, in the Veterans Administration Hospital – Aspinwall. He was born March 17, 1923, in Washington, a son of Wyck and Hazel Hootman Carroll. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Carroll served in the Army from April 24,1941, until his honorable discharge on October 11, 1943.  He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and an American Defense Medal. Mr. Carroll retired from Washington Steel in 1985, and every year since has spent six months of the year in Fort Myers, Florida. He was an avid wood carver and enjoyed riding his bicycle. Mr. Carroll was a member of Washington Alliance Church. On December 20, 1944, he married Jean J. Jackson, who survives. Also surviving are five children, Carolyn (Halden) Grimm of Gibsonia, Elaine (Edison) Vorhes of Washington, Marie (Robert) Ewing of Washington, Marjorie C. (Greg) Olenick of Leesburg, Florida, and James H. (Darla) Carroll, Jr., of Washington; 10 grandchildren, Danny (Jill) Vorhes, Pamela (Neal) Thompson, Jamie (Kara) Vorhes, Robby (Heather) Ewing, Jon (Sabrina) Ewing, Michael (Jennifer) Ewing, Michele (Brad) Kruger, David (Joy) Olenick, Brennen Olenick, and James H. “Jimmie” Carroll, III; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a great-granddaughter, Chloe Marie Ewing, who died in infancy; a sister, Cleabelle Chambers; two brothers, Wilson Carroll and Clinton Carroll; and a daughter-in-law Barbara Carroll. Friends will be received on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, March 26th, with Rev. James Newman officiating.  Burial will follow in Upper Buffalo Cemetery.  Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
