Helen Jean Sumney

Helen Jean Sumney, 84, of Eighty-Four, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, in her home. She was born on March 5, 1935, in Washington, a daughter of the late John and Mary Kopko Shuba. A family-oriented, Christian woman, Helen was lovingly devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was fond of her refrigerator magnets and knick-knack collection, and enjoyed perusing yard sales and playing board games with her grandchildren. In 1958 she married Merle Sumney, who died on August 7, 1993. Surviving are four children, Debra Sue (the late William) Keeney, of East Washington, Laura Jean Grubbs, of Washington, John C. (Mary) Sumney, of Washington, and Donald M. Sumney, with whom she resided, of Eighty-Four; three brothers, Stanley “Stush” (Alice) Shuba, of Washington, Mike (Louise) Shuba, of Washington, and Larry Kopko, of Ohio; eleven grandchildren, Laurie (Josh) Courtney, Rebekah Keeney, Lace Anne Keeney, Chrissy Grubbs (Neiko Grogan), Jackie Roberts, Robert John (Katie) Grubbs, Sarah (Daniel) Stockdale, Daniel Sumney (Lexi Stupar), Shaina (Brandon) Kernodle, and Chelsea (Brent) Hartness, and Jessica Sumney (Steven Kurre); eight great grandchildren, Noah, Jonas, Liam, North, Grace, Camrie, Kyrie, and Lincoln; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Sumney; as well as several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, George W. Sumney, who died in infancy; a grandson, Michael Elliott Keeney; two brothers, Sam Shuba and John Shuba; and a sister, Violet McKinney. In her final days, Helen was lovingly attended to by her granddaughter, Jessica Sumney, and a family friend, Melissa Flowers. Friends will be received on Saturday, July 13, 2019, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m., in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, PA., where services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Sunday, July 14, 2019, with Pastor Todd Stemple officiating. Burial in the Washington Cemetery will be private, and held at the convenience of the family.
