George F. Postlethwait

June 6, 1938 — February 1, 2018

George F. Postlethwait, 79, of Prosperity, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2018, at The Grove of Washington, after fighting for fifteen months against glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. He was born June 6, 1938, in Washington, to the late Fred and Hazel Moore Postlethwait.  He married the love of his life Joan Hunter on September 5, 1959, and they spent many happy anniversaries in their camper at Myrtle Beach, SC. George graduated from Trinity High School in 1956, attended night school at Pitt, and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Psychology from W&J while working full-time as a lineman for West Penn Power.  He retired from West Penn after 35 years of service. A proud Army veteran, George served in the 630th Transportation Company at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, NC, from 1961-1962.  He particularly enjoyed participating in the Veterans’ Day programs at Joe Walker Elementary School and was a member of Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175 in Washington. George was a faithful member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Prosperity for 60 years and had served as both deacon and ruling elder.  His hobbies included restoring Gravely tractors with his friend Ed Minton, golfing, Western square dancing, building birdhouses, shooting sporting clays, attending car shows with his nephew Doug, working out / socializing with his friends at Cameron Wellness Center, and attending McGuffey sporting events. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Ord Postlethwait, his sisters Virginia Houston and Elsie Baker, and a niece Joyce Stein. Mr. Postlethwait is survived by his wife Joan; a niece Darlene (Jack) Houser; nephews Douglas Houston, Edward Baker, Tom Postlethwait; nieces Cindy and Pam Postlethwait; and a host of family and friends who will miss his kind heart and dry sense of humor. Friends will be received from 12-2 and 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 5th, at Bethel Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 3905 Park Avenue South, Prosperity, with Rev. Eric Toohey of Bethel and Rev. Joshua Brown of Bellefield Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, officiating.  Interment will follow at Upper Ten Mile Cemetery, Prosperity.  Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bethel Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 3905 Park Avenue South, Prosperity, PA, 15329.
