Evelyn C. Wood, 101, of Washington, died Wednesday, August 2, 2023, in Country Meadows. She was born April 3, 1922, in Washington, the daughter of the late David M. and Mary Margaret Lawrence Canan. She was the last of her immediate family. Evelyn graduated from Washington High School in 1940. Growing up, she worked in her father’s store, the Washington Meat Market. She celebrated her 100th birthday last year with a party at the Ramada Inn with eighty guests. She loved to bake pies and was known for her Thanksgiving dinners. An avid reader, she also crocheted and made afghans for all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Evelyn served as Chaplain for Buffalo Grange as well as other positions. She was very active in North Buffalo Church, as a deacon and in the Ladies Circle, as well as a member of the Taylorstown American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She loved to go camping and enjoyed her ice cream, in fact it was her last treat. She always looked forward to and enjoyed the Canan Reunion every August. On December 20, 1941, Evelyn married Russell R. “Bud” Wood, Jr., who died October 4, 1991 She is survived by her children, Ray Wood, II (Bob Guthrie), James D. Wood (Lisa); Donis Wood, Joyce Wood-Johns, Pamela Raley (Larry); nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Rita Canan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 711 Rural Valley Rd, Washington, PA 15301 Family and friends will be received Monday, August 7, 2023, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a service will follow at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in North Buffalo Cemetery.
