Elinor Hunt Ellis Newman, 89, of Washington, died Sunday, February 2, 2025, in Woodside at Southmont, Washington, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born December 31, 1935, in Washington, a daughter of the late Ursula Hootman and Frank Hunt. Elinor was a 1954 graduate of Washington High School. She worked for Bell Telephone Company as an operator after graduation and had also worked as a secretary at Wolfdale School and later in the Trinity High School Transportation Office. On June 2, 1956, she married the love of her life, Thomas Ellis, who passed away on April 8, 1988. On November 14, 1992, she married her second husband, Leroy Newman, who passed away on February 21, 2011. She was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church of Washington, having served as a Deacon and active member of the Bethany Sunday School Class. Elinor enjoyed vacations to the beach, traveling with close friends, playing cards, and solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles. It brought Elinor great joy to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are four children, Charles (Sally) Ellis of Fresno, Ohio, Becky (Karl) Knoneberg of Washington, Ronald Ellis of Augusta, Georgia, and Jennifer (Michael) Janovich of Claysville; a stepson, Chad (Jackie) Newman of Washington; 14 grandchildren, Jared (Rayna) Ankrom, Justin (Sarah) Ankrom, Jonas (Tiffany) Ankrom, Kurt (Danielle) Ellis, Laura (Andrew) Hartle, Thomas (Andi) Ellis, Austin Ellis, Emily (Noah) Fraley, JT (Shannon ) Ellis, Madison Janovich, Logan Janovich, Ayden Janovich, Hannah Newman and Ethan Newman; and 14 great-grandchildren. Deceased, in addition to her parents, are two sisters, Helen Hunt and Margire McCullough; and two brothers, Bob Hunt and Charles Hunt. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of Elinor’s caregivers at Woodside, as well as Gateway Hospice, for making her last months, weeks and days a loving and peaceful environment. Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2025, where services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 2025, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with Rev. Steve Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
