Dixie Lee Avolia, 83, of Hickory, died Wednesday, January 10, 2024, in The Washington Hospital. She was born October 5, 1940, in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late Harry K. Ullom and Agnes Pauline Nelson Ullom. Mrs. Avolia graduated from Chartiers High School and earned a licensed practical nurse diploma. For more than 40 years, she worked as a licensed practical nurse at several local health care facilities, including the Washington County Health Center, from where she retired. Mrs. Avolia was a member of Crossroads Presbyterian Church, the women’s auxiliary of Mt. Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Department, and the Martha Washington Garden Club. For many years, she served as the superintendent of crafts at the Washington County Fair. Mrs. Avolia loved her flower garden. She was a dedicated grandmother and great-grandmother and very active in her grandchildren’s lives. On April 28, 1962, she married Dominic “Sonny” Avolia, who died April 8, 2017. Surviving are two sons, Sam Avolia (Leslie) and Joseph Avolia (Hilary); a sister, Catherine Deyell; seven grandchildren, Joseph M. Avolia, Sam “Diesel” Avolia (McKenna); Tyler Dominic Avolia, Grace Coffield, A.J. Ritz, Gino Ritz, and Jaede Ritz; seven great-grandchildren, Irelynd, Dakohta, Emmah, Kamden, Owen, Knox, and Colter; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a sister, Barbara Nicholas. Friends will be received on Tuesday, January 16th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 17th. Burial will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory.
