Dan Marunich, 76, of Washington, died January 13, 2024, at his home. Dan, also known as “Dirty Dan,” was born April 18, 1947, in New Kensington, the son of the late George Marunich and Francis Nace. Mr. Marunich served his country in the United States Air Force from 1965 until his Honorable discharge in 1968, earning the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Medal 900-3, better known as the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and the HQ 3rd Div/Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. Dan was a Consol employee starting in 1970, until his retirement from Bailey Mine as a foreman in 2002. He was a member of the VFW #927, American Legion #175, AMVETS 1992, Mt. Dora, FL, Moose International. He loved Pittsburgh sports, fishing with family and friends at the “Point” in Hatteras, and spending his winters in Florida. On May 17, 1969, Dan married Elona “Lonnie” Marshalek, who survives. Surviving is a son, Daniel J. Marunich; a daughter, Michelle Haremaker; and his beloved grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a daughter, Christina Louise Murphy; brother, George Marunich, Jr.; and sister, Carol Amantea. Family and friends will be received Monday, January 22, 2024, 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd, 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, PA 15301, with a Blessing service Tuesday, January 23rd, at 11:30 am, with Father Miro officiating. Burial will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies with Military Honors accorded by American Legion #175, and the US AirForce.
