D. Reed Andrew

February 27, 1926 — December 17, 2017

D. Reed Andrew, 91, of Washington, died on Sunday, December 17, 2017, in Hawthorne Woods. He was born on February 27, 1926, in Amity, a son of the late Theodore Bell and Olive Luellen Andrew. A graduate of Trinity High School, Reed graduated from Waynesburg College in 1951, with a business degree. Mr. Andrew was an insurance agency manager for the Georgia Farm Bureau. While working and living in Atlanta, Reed became an avid Georgia Tech fan.  However, he always remained loyal to his roots, and loved watching, and rooting for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Being a Waynesburg College graduate, he continued in past years to have reunions with four of his closest fraternity brothers, and their wives.  It was a proud moment for him, when Waynesburg College became a University. Mr. Andrew was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church, and looked forward to the Communion Service that the Nurture Team would provide at Hawthorne Woods. God and country were very close to his heart, and he was a proud United States Navy WWII veteran. Reed was a very generous man, giving his time to work in the soup kitchen at his church in Atlanta.  He also sponsored a Cambodian family, and continued to help those in need. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, kind heart, and love for his family. On December 9, 2000, he married Ann McGowan, who died on October 4, 2009. When Reed married Ann, he was told that her two girls, and their families, were part of the deal.  Linda and Nancy often told him that the “D” in his name stood for “darling.” Surviving are two step-daughters, Linda McGowan (Mark) Brezinski, of Washington, and Nancy McGowan (Dr. Keith) Waddle, of Huntingdon; a brother, Samuel E. (Betty Jean) Andrew, of Marietta, GA; a sister, Mona Lea (the late Robert) Graham, of Washington; five step-grandchildren, Jay Cowieson, Jill Daniels, Matthew Brezinski, Nicole Magee, and Sean Waddle; as well as several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his first wife, Margaret Phillips, who died in October, 1997, a brother, Theodore Andrew, and two sisters, Jean Shrontz and Mabel Briggs. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, from 12 to 2 p.m., the time of service, in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., Washington, PA., with Rev. Jason Heffner officiating. Burial in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Faith U.P. Church, 900 E. Beau St., Washington, PA 15301, Waynesburg University, 51 W. College St., Waynesburg, PA 15370, or the charity of one’s choice.
