Carolyn Wiltrout Johnson

November 7, 1931 — October 10, 2024

Carolyn Wiltrout Johnson, 92, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2024, in Southmont Presbyterian Senior Care, Washington. She was born November 7, 1931, in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Allen Cooper and Lucy Barnhart Wiltrout. Caroline “Carolyn” was a 1950 graduate from Trinity High School, where she was a majorette and played basketball, earning the nickname “Star.” It was at Trinity that she met the love of her life, Jim Johnson, whom she married on May 24,1952, and began a family together, James Barry Johnson (Sharon), Robin Johnson Neel (Brad), and Dana Johnson Lyle (Greg). She was a proud grandmother to Brooke Johnson Sleek (Broc), Sarah Johnson Schreyer (Brady), Jim Johnson (Emily), Meredith Neel-Jurinko (Joey), Jordan Neel (Kaitlyn), Charles Lyle, and Sydney Caroline Lyle. She was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her beloved sister, Sandra Wiltrout Kelley. Carolyn and Jim happily attended many sporting events and band performances to see their next generations participate. She first worked at S.A. Meyers Jewelry Store on Main Street, then later worked as an operator for Bell Telephone. She went on to follow Jim during his military service to many stations throughout the south. After returning home to Washington, they built their home on the family farm. Carolyn then worked in the shoe business at Teeks Fine Shoes, Mr. Lee, and the Union Shoe Store on Main Street, from which she retired. Carolyn loved her customers and would even deliver shoes to those who had a hard time getting out. A wonderful cook, she was known for her famous fudge and her cream pies, especially coconut cream. She and Jim traveled extensively after retirement, but her heart was always with her family. She loved the Lord and she and her sisters loved singing their beloved hymns in perfect harmony. Carolyn was a 68-year member of Liberty Chapel Global Methodist Church. She was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steeler. She loved going to the Bell Telephone and Trinity High School Class reunions. She liked decorating her home, shopping, but was most passionate about spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Eugene, Alfred and Clarence “Fizz” Wiltrout, her sister, Cora Wiltrout Byrne, and her beloved husband, Jim, who passed away in 2010. Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2024, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2024, with Pastor Laura Saffell and Rev. Bradley Neel officiating. Entombment will follow in Washington Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial donations may be made to Liberty Chapel Global Methodist Church, 1330 Banetown Road, Washington, PA 15301. The whole family sends heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Southmont Presbyterian Senior Care for the love and tender care they gave to our mother.
