Betty Joyce Sprowls

Betty Joyce Sprowls passed away peacefully on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Goodwin House Alexandria in Alexandria, VA. Betty was born on May 31,1939, in Houston, and graduated from Chartiers Houston High School. She lived most of her life in or near Washington. She and her husband, Roger, had two daughters, Carie and Terie. Roger worked at West Penn Power and after the girls were grown, Betty worked at Bradley Physical Therapy Clinic. Roger and Betty loved life in Washington, where they enjoyed family, friends, walking, biking, and being active in their church (Church of the Covenant Presbyterian Church). Betty also loved everything about horses, and thoroughly enjoyed her horse, Buddy! She had a strong faith and had a heart for ministry and serving others. She served as a lay Presbyterian pastor at Concord Presbyterian Church and East Buffalo Presbyterian Church, and often served as a guest preacher in other local churches. She was also a licensed Assemblies of God minister. Betty’s best friend, later in life, was Shirley Huffman, and after the passing of their husbands, Betty and Shirley enjoyed traveling together and exploring new places. When Betty moved to Northern Virginia in 2018 to be close to her family, Shirley moved there as well. Shirley passed away on April 9, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Ruth Garrett, and her husband, Roger Sprowls. She is survived by daughters Carie (Bob) Thomas of Springfield, VA, and Terie (Joel) Kasper of Venetia; grandchildren Chris (Lindsay) Bashur and Mitch (Ashley) Bashur, Derek (Samantha) Kasper and Brian Kasper, Alan (Brianna) Thomas, and Jeffrey Thomas; and great grandchildren David Bashur, Rebecca Bashur, Logan Bashur, and Eleanor Bashur. Betty will always be remembered for her love of family, strong faith, generous heart and desire to make others feel happy and loved. Services will be held at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2024, in Washington Cemetery chapel. Everyone is asked to meet at 10:15 a.m. at William G. Neal Funeral Home, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, to proceed to the cemetery.
