Betty Lou Hickman Engle

November 30, 1937 — December 9, 2023

On Saturday, December 9, 2023, Betty Lou Loughman Hickman Engle, 86, formerly of Washington, took her last breath here on earth to take her first breath with her heavenly Father. She was born November 30, 1937, in Greene County, a daughter of the late Raymond E. and Blanche McGee Loughman. Betty Lou was a member of the Church of the Covenant, Washington. She also passionately served as a deacon and volunteer. Her frustration grew when her volunteer time at the church had to be reduced due to health concerns. She was a part of Bethel Bible classes, where she gleefully shared her faith with others, while expanding on her own journey. Betty Lou was a faithful servant. Betty Lou enjoyed her time as a secretary in the guidance office at the McGuffey Middle School. She knew most students by name and marveled when a past student showed up in her life. Birthday Brunch Group (retired teachers) was an anticipated event each month. She had gorgeous collections of Precious Moments, collector plates, Snow Babies, birds, angels, and Jim Shore. These collections beautifully decorated her home. She loved surrounding herself with friends and family. This was evident in her full social calendar and a 'busting at the seams' full house each holiday. She enjoyed annual traditions with her daughters, later shared with her daughter-in-law and granddaughters, of shopping at Kaufman's downtown Pittsburgh on Black Friday and the day after Christmas holiday sales at Hallmark stores. Most remembered will be the hours spent building puzzles with family, playing cards with friends, attending activities for her grandchildren, completing pictures in coloring apps and sharing them with those she was thinking about, her love of travel, her kind words, and her devotion to family, friends and her church. Mrs. Engle is survived by her children, Kathy Dougherty of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Kimberly Hickman of Jamestown, N.C., and Keith (Jessica) Hickman of Washington; her stepchild, Cindy (Brian) Shaw of Washington; grandchildren, Christopher (Betsy) Dougherty of St. Petersburg, Fla., Allison (Eric) Fryer of Canal Winchester, Emelia, Addie and Samuel Hickman of Washington; stepgrandchild, Samantha Shaw of Washington; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Noah, Lucas, Abigail and Hayden Fryer, Charlie and Jack Dougherty. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Lloyd Hickman, to whom she was married for 38 years, and Enoch George Engle, Jr. with whom she shared 10 years of marriage. Also proceeding her in death were brother and sister-in-law, Ralph E. and Helen Loughman. Thank you to those who have reached out to share memories. The memorial service will be held on May 11, 2024 at 1 PM at the Church Of The Covenant, 267 E. Beau St., Washington, PA. The interment for family will be immediately following at the Prosperity Cemetery, 25 Church Lane, Prosperity, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of the Covenant Preschool.
