Janet Sproul

Janet Sproul, 99, of Washington, died April 14, 2023, in Southmont Presbyterian Senior Care, Washington. She was born March 5, 1924, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late David and Elda Blickenderfer Carlton. She attended Penn Hills High School and had worked as a clerk for Oakmont Water Authority. Janet was a member of the Washington Alliance Church. She enjoyed playing piano and was a church pianist and organist. She loved to bake, especially pies and cakes, and collected Teddy Bears. Janet was known as the “Purple Lady” because of her love for the color purple. On March 30, 1945, Janet married Bud Sproul, who died May 13, 2009. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth (Luanna) Sproul, and Rev. Dr. Robert (Joan) Sproul; grandchildren, Melissa (Rev. Matthew) Merendino, Rachel (John) Michalko, Sarah Sproul, Heidi (Justin) McCartney, and Gretchen (Clayton) Lee; nineteen great-grandchildren; grandson-in-law, Brian Wallace; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Janet was preceded in death by her brothers, David Carlton, Jr., and Myron Carlton; sisters, Arlene Carlton, and Lavonne McIlrath; and granddaughter, Juliane Wallace. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mahaffey Camp & Conference Center, 1559 Mahaffey Grampian Hwy., Mahaffey, PA 15757. Family and friends will gather Thursday, April 20, 2023, from 11am to 1 pm, in Washington Alliance Church, 246 Sanitarium Road, Washington, PA 15301, the place of service at 1 pm with Rev. Dr. Robert Sproul officiating. Guests are encouraged to wear something purple. Interment will be private.
