Alexander A. Umshares

Alexander A. “Alex” Umshares, 94, of Washington, died May 30, 2023, in his home. He was born May 19, 1929, in Washington, the son of the late Anthony and Mary Ann Yaros Umshares. A graduate of Washington High School, Alex pursued his teaching career, earning a bachelor’s degree from California State College and a master’s degree from West Virginia University. Mr. Umshares taught for many years in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, retiring in 1982. Alex proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War 1951-1953. Military Honors will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton American Legion, Post 175, and the United States Army. He loved his family and grandchildren and enjoyed mowing the grass. On September 1, 1961, Alex married Shirley Ann Jacobs, who died April 22, 2003. Surviving is a daughter, Jennifer E. Miles (Ed); sons, Jeffrey E. Umshares (Cheryl), and Todd Alexander Umshares (Brenda); grandchildren, Zachary Miles, Matthew Miles (Bonnie), Samantha Provance (Justin), Ethan Umshares, Emily Umshares, Julia Umshares; great-grandchildren, Alex, Gabby, and Max; a sister, Dorothy Zollars (the late John); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Evelyn and Andrew. Family and friends will be received Sunday, June 4, 2023, 3-6 pm, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington; the service will be on Monday June 5th, at 12 pm. Entombment will follow in Washington Cemetery Garden Mausoleum.
