John I. Cordy, Sr.

John Ivor Cordy, Sr., 87, of Washington, died Sunday, November 8, 2009, in Humbert Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 14, 1922, in Washington, a son of the late Thomas Mark Ivor Cordy and Matilda Shanley Cordy. Mr. Cordy graduated from Washington High School. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Coast Guard, serving on active duty from January 10, 1943, until his honorable discharge on March 28, 1946, as a Motor Machinist’s Mate, first class. For his service, he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, American Theater Medal and World War II Victory Medal. For 35 years, Mr. Cordy worked for Bell Telephone as a switching supervisor. He was a member of Central Assembly of God Church in Houston and Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175. Mr. Cordy enjoyed pets, all types of sports, and especially skiing, which he started at age 60. On May 14, 1948, he married Lois Joy Polan, who died July 23, 2001. Surviving are three sons, David Mark Cordy of Reno, Nevada, Jeffrey Robert (Debra) Cordy of Warrenton, Virginia, and John I. (Debbie) Cordy, Jr., of Rayne, Louisiana; nine grandchildren, Jesse, Rachel, Benjamin, Joshua, Jory, Megan, Lindsey, Victoria and Valerie; a niece and caregiver, Jill Frick of Washington; and his companion and caregiver, Christine Pyeritz. Deceased are a daughter, Christy S. Cordy; and two brothers, Robert Lawrence Cordy and James Ashley Cordy. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 14th, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with Rev. Todd Stemple officiating. Inurnment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175.
