Opal Day Hower Mollenauer, 88, of Washington, died at 8 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2007, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.
She was born May 21, 1919, in Washington, a daughter of Hiram Paul Day and Rebecca Romaine Keeney Day.
Mrs. Mollenauer attended a two-room school in Pancake, now Pancake Inn, and graduated from Trinity High School.
She worked part-time as a clerk in Murphy's and Woolworth's in Washington. She also worked as an assembler for 13 years for RCA in both the Meadow Lands and Canonsburg plants.
Mrs. Mollenauer was a member of AARP.
Her first husband, Stanley W. Hower, died in 1960.
On November 20, 1962, she married Lawrence William Mollenauer, who died June 27, 1982.
Surviving are a son, Stanley W. (Joan) Hower Jr. of North Charleston, S.C.; a daughter, Audrey Rotunda of Washington; a stepson, Elmer E. "Billy" (Pat) Mollenauer of Warren, Ohio; a sister, Helen Day Barlow of Washington; eight grandchildren, Frank Rotunda Jr., Cynthia Rotunda (Scott) Pruce, Jodie (David) Smith, Schelley Hower, Virginia Louise (Gunput) Wahg, Darlene Price, Donald (Tina) Greer and James (Jeanine) Greer; three stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Deceased are two daughters, Rebecca Joyce Hower, who died in 1992, and Margaretta Darlene "Peg" Hower, who died in 2005; a grandson, Shawn Greer; and two brothers, Paul Preston Day and Thomas Franklin Day.
Mrs. Mollenauer's maternal grandparents were Franklin Keeney and Rebecca Jane Blake Keeney, and her paternal grandparents were Thomas Axtell Day and Sarah Melissa Cary Day. She was descended from many early pioneers of Washington County who arrived as early as 1781. Hannah Gould Axtell Lincoln arrived with her son, Thomas Axtell, and his wife, Mary Tuttle, and their children. Mary Doty Cooper settled here with her son, Zebulon Cooper, and his wife, Mary White, and their children in 1777. Mary Doty was the daughter of Jonathan Doty of New Jersey, whose father was Samuel Doty and grandfather was Edward Doty of the Mayflower, both of Massachusetts. John Clutter, a Revolutionary War soldier, and his wife, Ruth Wade, of New Jersey, arrived in Pennsylvania with their children following his military service. Their daughter, Elizabeth Clutter, married Nathan Axtell, son of above-mentioned Thomas Axtell. Their daughter, Ellen Axtell, married Thomas Day, son of Darling Day, who arrived as a single man in Washington before 1790. Thomas and Ellen Axtell Day's son, Hiram, was the father of Thomas Axtell Day, who married Sarah Melissa Cary. She was the daughter of Daniel Madison Cary and Mary Huss. Daniel Madison Cary was the son of Daniel Cary and Mary Cooper, who was the daughter of above-mentioned Zebulon Cooper.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
