Leona Mae Sargent, 96, of Washington, died at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2006, in Washington Hospital, following a two-month illness. She was born July 9, 1909, in Washington, a daughter of Thomas and Rosetta Dietrich Mundell. Mrs. Sargent was a member of Lone Pine Christian Church and was a clerk at the former Caldwells and G.C. Murphy Co. stores in Washington. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of Order of Eastern Star 687 and was the oldest living female member of Women's Democratic Association. On February 19, 1931, she married Melvin Larry Sargent, who died March 23, 1981. Surviving are a son-in-law, Jack S. Iams of Maryland; two grandchildren, Tami Iams and Kathy Orwig; and a great-granddaughter, Kathryn Orwig. Deceased are a daughter, Helen Iams; two brothers, Jack and Richard Mundell; and a sister, Ruth Mundell Gettig.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 14, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Lone Pine Cemetery.
