Nelson E. Holmes, Jr., 80, of Washington, died Thursday, June 7, 2007, following a five-year illness.
He was born July 20, 1926, in Zelienople, a son of Nelson Edmond and Beulah Colvert Holmes, Sr.
Mr. Holmes served in the United States Army for 21 years, including two tours of duty in both Korea and Vietnam. For his service during the Korean War, he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal and Meritorious Unit Commendation. For his service during the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, and the Good Conduct Medal Bronze Clasp with four loops.
Mr. Holmes was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion and Hawkins Post Home 927 of the VFW.
His companion, Fay E. Caldwell, survives.
Also surviving are a brother, Carl Holmes of Lake Charles, Louisiana; a sister, Ethel “Fay” Nilson of Gibsonia; a sister-in-law, Bertha Holmes; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two brothers, James R. Holmes and Elmer Holmes.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation or services. Arrangements are being handled by William G. NealFuneral Homes, Ltd., Washington.
