Union Camp employee served during WWII.
Edward Kenneth "Red" Hughes, 77, of Washington, died Thursday, October 20, 2005, in Donnell House, Washington, following a one-year illness.
He was born August 10, 1928, in Washington, a son of James and Elizabeth Malone Hughes.
Mr. Hughes attended Washington High School and was employed in the shipping department of Union Camp/International Paper for more than 40 years.
He served as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater with the 552nd Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Co.
Mr. Hughes was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hawkins Post Home 927 in Washington and American Legion Post 902 in Houston.
He enjoyed fishing.
Surviving are two sons, Edward Joseph (Kathy) Hughes and James W. (Tracie) Hughes, both of Washington; three daughters, Rita Ann Garrick of Yankton, S.D., and Vicki Lynn (Larry) Dever and Carol Beth (Jim) Newman, both of Washington; two sisters, Hazel Adams of Washington and Florence Cafreck of Cleveland, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Tracy Zeeb, Eric Shrum, Richard Irey, Michele Hanna, Jesse Gray, Jennifer Carmichaels, Patrick, Heather and Mandy Hughes and James Hughes Jr.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Deceased are four brothers, Williams, James, Jack and Don Hughes; and two sisters, Donna Keirs and a sister who died in infancy.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 23, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, October 24, in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Post 902, Houston, and VFW Post 191, Canonsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington, PA 15330.
