Bernard Leroy Sten

August 20, 1923 — October 27, 2005

Bernard LeRoy Sten., 82, of Washington, PA, died after a short illness on Thursday, October 27, 2005 at the Washington Hospital. He was born on August 20, 1923, in Washington, PA, a son of C. Albin and Lilly E. Johanson Sten. Mr. Sten was employed by Jessop Steel, retiring in 1983 after 42 years of service. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council. He was a member of the Balder Lodge 308, Washington Elks 776. Moose Lodge 22, the American Legion Post 639, Claysville, and the American Legion Post 175. Mr. Sten served on the board of directors of the United Fund, and was co-chairman of the 1963 United Fund, and was president of Jessop Local 3891 Steelworkers District 15. Mr. Sten served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, with the 148th Engineer Combat Battalion. He received the World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon, and one Silver and five Bronze Stars, while serving in Normandy, France, Ardennes, Central Europe and Germany. After the war, he organized reunions for the 148th Engineer Battalion. He attended Trinity High School, class of 1941. On August 29, 1947, he married Geraldine M. Pethel, who died June 28, 1988. Surviving are 2 sons, Larry J. Sten of Washington and Douglas L. Sten of Brooklyn, Michigan; a brother Carl Sten of Washington; 4 grandchildren, Ryan, Chris, Cassie and Derek; and a devoted friend, Olivia Lyons. Deceased is a sister, Doris Barnhart. Friends will be received on Monday, October 31, 2005 from 2-9 p.m. at the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, PA 15301, and at the First Lutheran Church on Tuesday, from10-11:00 a.m., where services will be held at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Schott officiating. Burial will follow at the Washington Cemetery.
