George Thomas Wylie, 87, of Washington, died at 4 a.m. Thursday, October 27, 2005, in Washington County Health Center, Washington, following a lengthy illness. He was born April 17, 1918, in Houston, a son of LeRoy and Edna Champ Wylie. During World War II, Mr. Wylie served as an Army Air Forces staff sergeant, earning the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. For 25 years, Mr. Wylie was the manager of Thorofare grocery stores in Canonsburg and Washington. For more than 18 years, he worked in the maintenance department of the Canonsburg and Washington armories. He was a trained income tax-return preparer and an avid reader. On February 21, 1941, he married Virginia Rose, who died October 22, 2005. Surviving are three sons, Thomas S. Wylie of Jacksonville, Fla., Edward L. (Jane) Wylie of Washington and David K. (Jane) Wylie of Port Clinton, Ohio; two sisters, Donna Nixon of Meadow Lands and Marlene Thomas of Maryland; seven grandchildren, Susan, Tommy, Matthew, Michael and Brittany Wylie and Jennifer Schoeph and Melissa Wylie Wierzba; and four great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, James Wylie and Donald Wylie, who died in infancy; and three sisters, Margaret Roach, Jeanie Grassler and Ida May Wylie.
Friends will be received from noon to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 31.
