James "J.D." Smith

James D. "J.D." Smith, 91, of Washington, died unexpectedly, Thursday, September 8, 2005, in the Washington Hospital. He was born in Amwell Township, on November 10, 1913, a son of Fulton Steven and Florence Ola Christopher Smith. Mr. Smith was a 1933 graduate of Washington High School and had worked more than thirty-five years at the Observer-Reporter having held several positions. He was a member of the Third United Presbyterian Church where he was very active and served as an Elder. Mr. Smith was a member of Sunset Lodge # 623 and was a 33rd degree Mason. He was committed and extremely involved and all aspects of Masonic Work, having held various local and state offices throughout his lifetime. In his earlier years, he enjoyed farming and woodworking. On October 5, 1936, he married Mary Helen Allison, who died on December 26, 2002. Surviving are two daughters, Elaine ( Richard ) Patton of West Middletown, and Joyce ( Bill ) McCracken of Washington; four grandchildren, Joni Patton ( Ed ) Paviol of Carlisle, Janice Patton ( Martin ) Yoskovich of Carmichaels, William McCracken of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Melia McCracken ( Jimmy ) Oddi of Canonsburg; eight great-grandchildren, Jaclyn Ferrell, Brittany,, Alyssa, William, and Samuel McCracken, J.D., Allison, and Ashley Oddi; as well as several cousins. Friends of James D. "J.D." Smith, 91, of Washington, who died Thursday, September 8, 2005, will be received on Saturday, from 2 to 8 pm and Sunday, September 10, 2005, from 12-noon to 3 pm, the time of services, in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington. Rev. Dr. Richard A. Morledge officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in Washington Cemetery. The family is requesting memorial donations be made to: Third United Presbyterian Church, 22 Cortez Drive, Washington, PA 15301.
