Walter William Smith

Walter William Smith Walter William Smith, 88, of Washington, died at 12:15 p.m., Sunday, April 29, 2007, in Donnell House, following an eighteen-month illness. Mr. Smith was born June 28, 1918, in Hilliards, a son of William and Bessie Della Ruth Smith. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and World War II Victory Medal. He served in the Philippine Liberation Battle, with the 163rd Infantry Regiment, 41st Division and attained the rank of tech 5. Mr. Smith was a self-employed electrical contractor and a member of Marianna American Legion Post 0744 and Senior Citizens. He enjoyed dogs, doing woodwork, gardening and fishing. His wife, Helen Smith, preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons, Robert Smith, of Heidelberg, Bruce Smith, of Mobile, Alabama; three daughters, Donna Harty, of Carnegie, Bernice Joiner, of Mobile, Alabama, Wanda Wilson, of McKees Rocks; a brother, Lloyd Smith, of Bulger; five sisters, Alice Snyder, of Alliance, Ohio, Kate Smith, of Bulger, Jen Ryan, of Bulger, Eleanore Amon, of Pittsburgh, and Hazel Smith, of Holly Hill, Florida; 14 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. Deceased is a granddaughter, Amanda Lee Gerheart. A service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 3, 2007, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue.
