John Robert Conners

Former Washington Steel employee was active volunteer John Robert Connors, 85, of Washington, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, in his home. He was born April 14, 1919, in Washington, a son of John M. and Bess DeNormandie Connors. Mr. Connors was a 1937 graduate of Washington High School and a 1942 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College. He served as a pilot with the 491st Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force in England during World War II. Mr. Connors worked for Washington Steel Corp. for 39 years, most of that time as a sales representative in New York, New Jersey and New England. While living in New Jersey, he volunteered for United Way, was treasurer of a Boy Scout troop for many years and served as a trustee for Emmanuel Baptist Church. After retiring in Washington, he delivered Meals on Wheels and was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and was a member of the House Committee. Mr. Connors had a lifelong interest in wildflowers and birds. On June 19, 1948, he married Helen Boord, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, J. Mark Connors, at home, and William B. Connors of Corvallis, Ore.; a granddaughter, Erin Connors Hart; and a niece. Deceased are a daughter, Kathleen Hart; and a brother, Richard Connors. CONNORS - Friends of John Robert Connors, 85, of Washington, who died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, are invited to a memorial service at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 30, in First Baptist Church, Washington. The family will receive friends in the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Albert Gallatin Hospice, 20 Highland Park Drive, Uniontown, PA 15401, or First Baptist Church, College and Wheeling streets, Washington, PA 15301. Arrangements are under the direction of William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington.
