Merle G. Daugherty

Merle G. “ Jiggs “ Daugherty, 70, of Washington, died Thursday, March 4, 2004 in the Washington Hospital Following a short illness. He was born on June 3, 1933 in Washington, a son of Martin J. Sweitzer and Dorothy Kinnan. Mr. Daugherty attended Washington High School. He later was a Pitcher for the St. Louis Browns and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. Mr. Daugherty was retired from Jessop Steel having been a Grinder for more than 40 years. Additionally, he owns Horses which race at the Meadows and has done so for many years. Mr. Daugherty was a member of the Jessop Club. On December 31, 1969 he married Barbara Carroll who died in 1986. Surviving are a daughter, Teddy Davis of Prospect, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Tyler Davis; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents are three brothers, Floyd, Joseph, and Alden Daugherty. Friends of Merle “ Jiggs “ Daugherty, of Washington, will be received from 7 to 9 PM Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Sunday in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held on Monday, March 8, 2004, at 11:00 am, Pastor J. Gary Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
