George Raymond Coffey

George Raymond Coffey, 81, of Washington, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, in Washington County Health Center. He had been ill since April 2007. He was born July 1, 1927, in Washington, a son of George Clark Coffey and Elsie Marie Wilson Coffey. When young, Mr. Coffey resided at Coffey’s Crossing. He was a 1946 graduate of Washington High School and attended Penn Commercial for two years. From September 1950 until September 1952, he served in the United States Army with Company B., 3rd Chemical Mortar Battalion. Mr. Coffey worked as a postal clerk for the Washington Post Office for 22 years, retiring in 1990. He previously worked as an accountant for Union Drilling for 30 years. Mr. Coffey enjoyed fishing, photography, reading and solving crossword puzzles, and loved animals and watching hummingbirds. He especially loved and enjoyed his grandsons. Mr. Coffey was a member of Hart Avenue Church of the Nazarene. On September 15, 1955, he married Norma Jean Barney, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Glenda (David) Burt of Washington; a sister, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Ken) Cox of Leland, North Carolina; two grandsons, Danny Ray and Duane Robert Burt; a niece, Robin Haines; and a nephew, Kenneth (Celia) Cox, Jr. Deceased is a brother, Paul. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008, with Pastor James York officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to Crossing the Jordan Christian Health Center, 289 East Beau Street, Washington PA 15301, or to Hart Avenue Church of the Nazarene, 913 Addison Street, Washington PA 15301.
