WWII Navy vet was avid golfer.
Donald Edward Cundall, 88, of South Minster, died at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008, in UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh. He had been in declining health for the past five years.
He was born April 1, 1920, in Washington, the eldest son of Edward Mandille and Clara Tiny Spence Cundall.
Mr. Cundall was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Whitney, USS Reid, USS Cascade and USN Subbase Pearl Harbor in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder for many years, and in later years, he was affilliated with Laboratory Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Cundall was a retired master plumber of Local Union 27, having worked in the construction of numerous hospitals in Pittsburgh.
He was an avid golfer for more than 60 years, having played in Elks League and numerous other leagues, was an active member and past master of Sunset Lodge 623 F&AM, past presiding officer of York Rite Bodies and Syria Shrine and a member of BPOE 776 and Arms Club. He was committed to and extremely involved in all aspects of masonic works.
On November 28, 1942, he married Ann Elizabeth (Betty Ann) Stenhouse, daughter of David Stenhouse and Annie Owens of San Francisco, Calif. She died February 23, 1995.
Surviving are daughters Dona C. Hamilton of Washington and Margaret C. Cundall of Columbia, S.C.; a son, Donald E. Cundall II of Washington; three grandchildren, Heather Leigh, Heath Edward Owens Hamilton and Nathan Stewart Hamilton; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah Leigh Byers, Brandon Hamilton and Kalie Hamilton.
Deceased are a brother, Earl Wilford Cundall, who died Februay 20, 1984; a sister, Rosada Vincent Reedy, who died March 3, 2005; and a grandson, Donald Keith Hamilton, who died October 16, 1965.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, followed by interment in Washington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Presbyterian SeniorCare Benevolent Fund or Shriners Hospital for Children.
