Sophia Pauline Junko, 92, of Washington, died Thursday, July 3, 2008, in Washington County Health Center. She had been in declining health for the last three years.
Mrs. Junko was born December 19, 1915, in Collinsville, Oklahoma, a daughter of Samuel and Pauline Burcyk Chmiel.
She worked at Union Camp as a machine operator for thirty years.
Mrs. Junko was a member of Holy Trinity National Catholic Church and the church’s Ladies Adoration Society. She was involved in various church related projects, including making pierogies.
She enjoyed all sports.
On August 18, 1941, she married Frederick “Frank” Junko, who died May 1980.
Surviving are two sons, Ron Junko, of Washington and Robert M. Junko, of Upper St. Clair; a brother, Frank Chmiel, and a sister, Helen Kopcha, both of Washington; nine grandchildren, Jeff, Mike, Jay, Fred, Dana, Krista, Matthew, Gretchen, and Ben; and fourteen great grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Fred Junko, and two brothers, George Chmiel and Benjamin Chmiel, who was killed in action in World War II.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2008, in Holy Trinity National Catholic Church, 605 Hewitt Avenue, Washington, with Father Felix Pyzowski, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Holy Trinity National Catholic Church General Fund.
