Harold L. “Butch” Hawkins, 60, of Washington, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, in Washington Hospital, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy and brave battle with cancer.
He was born May 24, 1947, in Washington, a son of the late Herbert Nathaniel Hawkins and Edna Mae Pettit Conklin.
Mr. Hawkins graduated from Washington High School in 1966.
On September 19, 1966, he entered the U.S. Army and served with
H Headquarters 24th Signal Battalion, Infantry Division, at Fort Riley, Kansas, 5th U.S. Army. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Rifle Marksman Medal and two Over Seas Service Bars. On March 18, 1969, he received an Honorable Discharge.
Mr. Hawkins was employed at Brockway Glass for fourteen years, and Union Camp and International Paper for nineteen years. His last position was as a machine operator at Perryman Company, where he worked for three years.
Mr. Hawkins was dedicated to hard work. He enjoyed fishing and collecting eagles.
He was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 American Legion and Arms Club.
On August 12, 1966, he married Rebecca Suzanne Phillips, who survives.
Also surviving are his step father, Willis Conklin, a son, Todd Hawkins, of the Pocono’s; a daughter, Lori (Tom) Moore, of Washington; two brothers, Herbert E. “Skip” Hawkins, of Ashtabula, OH, Lowe Michael Hawkins, of Washington; a step brother, Michael Hawkins, of New Kingston, OH; four sisters, Wilma (Arnold) Schulte, of Ashtabula, OH, Grace Marie Hawkins and Nancy (Puff) Carter, both of Washington, and Bonnie (Don) Neely, of Claysville; a step sister, Sandy Conklin, of Washington; and a granddaughter, Brittany Allen.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his step mother, Esther Hawkins; two brothers, Joey and Chuckie Hawkins.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 22, 2008. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
