Alfred Maryanski, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and decorated World War II veteran, died on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Donnell House in Washington. Mr. Maryanski fought cancer for ten months prior to his death. He was 87.
He was born October 8, 1920, in Moundsville, WV, a son of Stanley J. and Catherine Astemborowski Maryanski. He was the fourth of five children. Mr. Maryanski attended Clark School and Washington High School.
He enlisted with the Guard in December of 1940. Mr. Maryanski received his paratrooper wings and was training in Virginia when he joined the US Army 88th Division, H Company and served in the 351st Infantry Regiment. Mr. Maryanski was deployed in November 1943.
Mr. Maryanski served 23 months of overseas combat. He participated in the Rome-Arno, Po Valley and Northern Apennines Campaigns.
For his service, Mr. Maryanski was awarded several medals, including the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart, for wounds received during combat in Rome.
During his time in service, Mr. Maryanski participated in amateur boxing events and was a devoted athlete.
After his discharge, Mr. Maryanski returned to Washington, where he met Margaret Jean Eagon. They were married November 11, 1947. As newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Maryanski moved to Chicago where he was receiving schooling to become a tailor. It was in Chicago that their only child, Juanita, was born. The family later returned to Washington, and Mr. Maryanski went to work as an electrical tester at McGraw Cooper Industries. He retired after 32 years.
Mr. Maryanski was an avid bird watcher and general nature lover. He was a devoted coffee drinker, despite the temperature or time of day. He also enjoyed painting, yard work and spending time with his family. Every Saturday evening, Mr. Maryanski would play cards with long time friends and companions. During their 60 years of marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Maryanski traveled extensively and greatly enjoyed their many trips to Mexico.
Mr. Maryanski was a member and usher at St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Edwin Scott Linton, Post 175, American Legion, as well as a lifetime member and past officer of the Pulaski Club, where he enjoyed playing poker.
Mr. Maryanski was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Eugene and Joseph Marinski, and two sisters, Mary Mundell and Irene McClousky.
Mr. Maryanski is survived by his wife, Margaret Maryanski and their daughter, Juanita, wife of Gary Karluk, of Washington. Also surviving are three granddaughters, April Wilcoxson and husband Doug, of Safford AZ, Crystal Dillon and husband Randy, of Brownsville, and Rebecca Karluk and husband Mark Stollar, of Houston. Mr. Maryanski also had three great grandchildren, Colton, Garrett and Abigail Dillon; and served as a surrogate grandfather to Anna and Emmalea Beck of Washington.
Mr. Maryanski has touched many lives with his compassionate and carefree nature. He will be greatly missed and forever loved by all who knew him.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 2008, in St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, 320 Henderson Avenue, Washington, with Father Thomas D. O’Neil, as celebrant. Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 American Legion will accord military rites.
