James R. Piatt, Sr., 80, of Washington, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, in the Washington Hospital Emergency Room. He was born in Washington on May, 31, 1924, a son of Amos H. and Florence Lilly Johnston Piatt.
Mr. Piatt was a retired truck driver having worked at Ball Glass.
He was formerly a member of the Auxiliary Police in Washington, was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post # 175 American Legion, and the L.O.O.M. # 22. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, Western Movies and reading the comics.
From 1943 to 1946, he served in the United States Army and fought with the 502nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in the Southern Philippines Liberation and Okinawa. He received the World War II Victory Medal, Purple Heart, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2-Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2-Bronze Stars, and the Good Conduct Medal.
On March 5, 1948, he married Betty Jane Martin who survives. Also surviving are a son, James R. Piatt, Jr., of Washington; three daughters, Twila Lehew and husband John of Waynesburg, Sally McKahan wife of the late Bob McKahan of Washington, Lynn Maiello and husband Frank of Washington; a brother Gerald Piatt of Arden; nine grandchildren, Tammy Ball, John Lehew, Jr., Jamie Piatt Studt, Janie Lehew, Bobbi Jo Novak, Rob McKahan, Dana Maiello, Jimmy Piatt, and Frankie Maiello; as well as eleven great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a brother Paul Kenneth Piatt.
Friends of James R. Piatt, Sr., 80, of Washington, who died Sunday, April 10, 2005, will be received on Monday from 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military Honors graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post # 175 American Legion.
