George R. Montgomery, Sr.

Manhattan Project engineer taught at W&J George R. Montgomery Sr., 91, of Washington, died at 8:37 a.m. Friday, November 28, 2004, in Washington Hospital, following an 18-month illness. He was born September 17, 1912, in Washington, a son of Frank and Mary Lee Montgomery. Mr. Montgomery was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Washington. He was a graduate of Washington High School and Washington & Jefferson College, where he taught physics for 10 years. Mr. Montgomery was employed as an engineer at Rayetheon Corp. and was involved in the Manhattan Project. He also was involved in real estate. He was an avid ham operator for 70 years On March 27, 1940, he married Frances King, who died July 3, 1993. Surviving are a son, George R. Montgomery Jr. of Washington; two daughters, Carol Pletcher of Warner, N.H., and Susan Montgomery of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Jean Deweick of Rochester, N.Y.; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Pletcher. At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. Services and interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Citizens Library, 55 South College Street, Washington, PA 15301. Arrangements are by William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., Washington.
