First Pa. woman to become certified milk tester-handler
Una Elizabeth Laws Nystrom, 92, of Lakewood, Ohio, formerly of Washington, died at 8:40 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2003, in Lutheran Home, Westlake, Ohio.
She was born April 17, 1911, in West Alexander, a daughter of Fred D. and Edna L. Richey Gatten.
She was the oldest living member of Washington's Church of Christ.
She had been a seamstress, owning her own business, The Needle Shop, in Washington Trust Building. She was later employed at Charles Gessner Shop.
She was the first woman in Pennsylvania to become a certified milk tester-handler.
On August 4, 1931, she married Joseph Laws, who died July 25, 1967.
On April 14, 1989, she married John M. Nystrom, who died May 12, 1989.
Surviving are a son, Joseph F. Laws of Lakewood; a granddaughter, Cheryl Russell of North Olmsted, Ohio; three great-grandchildren; and a niece and two nephews.
Deceased are a brother, Fred Gatten Jr.; and two sisters, Reva Bennett Beatty and Mildred Rogers.
NYSTROM - Friends of Una Elizabeth Laws Nystrom of Lakewood, Ohio, formerly of Washington, who died Friday, October 10, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 14, in Church of Christ, 700 Allison Avenue, Washington, with Robert J. Davison officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
