Mary E. Stewart, 104, of Christopher’s Personal Care Home, Washington, died Friday, October 3, 2003 at 12:30 AM in KADE Nursing Home. She was formerly of Old Hickory Ridge Road adjacent Crossroads Presbyterian Church which she was a long time member of. Mrs. Stewart served various capacities throughout her church life. She was one of the founding members of the Church Missionary Society having served as president for many years. Later, her peers named the society The Mary Stewart Missionary Society in her honor. Her Church was the joy of her life and she attended regularly well into her 90’s. She was born in Belmont County, Ohio on September 9, 1899 a daughter of William and Della Ferrell Denham. After graduating from Belmont County Schools, she graduated from Muskingum Normal School and afterwards obtained a teaching position in the One Room Welch School in Chartiers Township. On May 10, 1921 she married Carl Marquis Stewart who died on September 4, 1980. She later assisted her husband in his farming avocation, preparing and serving meals to the many farmers on bailing and threshing days Surviving are a son Carl Eugene Stewart of Bastrop, Texas; two daughters, Betty McVay of Winter Haven, Florida and Marie S. Bryner of Washington; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death are two sons, John D. and James W. Stewart; three brothers, Emerson, John, and Virgil Denham; a sister Emma Kettlewell. Friends of Mary E. Stewart, 104 of Washington who died on October 3, 2003 will be received on Sunday from 12 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held on Monday, October 6, 2003 in Chartiers Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 502 Old Hickory Ridge Road, Washington from 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM, the time of services. Interment will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory. The family requests memorial donations be made to one of the following; Chartiers Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 502 Old Hickory Ridge Road, Washington, PA 15301 or her great grand daughter, Julie Kacena c/o Action International Ministries, PO Box 398, Mountlake Terrace, Washington, 98043.
